Crompton Moor

Welcome to the Friends of Crompton Moor web site

and the Crompton Moor Unaffiliated Gazette, the best place for up to date news, views and information about Crompton Moor.

Crompton Moor, near Shaw, lying between Oldham and Rochdale is an upland heath area, about 170 Acres of which is owned by Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council.

275 Acres of the moorland, including the Council owned area, is rated as a Grade A. Site of Biological Interest ( SBI ) particularly for it’s habitat importance to bird and mammal species, but also for it’s overall biodiversity value.

It’s proximity to the edge of the Greater Manchester Conurbation has made it a popular attraction for walkers, ramblers, bird watchers, riders and cyclists but also brings it’s share of challenges which threaten the future of the moor and it’s wildlife.

Recently the Council has presented proposals that could fundamentally change the nature of the Crompton Moor for the wildlife and all it’s users.

The Friends of Crompton Moor set out to help safeguard the future of this precious site in the face of such challenges and, unlike the Crompton Moor User Group, is completely independent of the Council and it’s Project management board. Through these web pages you can find out what is really happening, what kind of proposals are being made and what you can do to get involved.
